HOUSEMAID to compete at Cannes
Two South Korean movies have been invited to the official competition for this year’s Cannes Film Festival, the event’s organizer said Thursday.
“Housemaid,” directed by Im Sang-soo, is a tragedy starring Jeon Do-youn, who was named best actress at Cannes in 2007 for her role in “Secret Sunshine.” In her new role, Jeon plays a housemaid who begins to have sexual relations with her master.
“Poetry,” directed by Cannes award-winning director Lee Chang-dong, features a woman in her mid-60s who writes poems for the first time after taking a course in literature while raising her teenaged granddaughter.
This year is the third time that two South Korean movies have been accepted to the film festival’s official competition at the same time, with the other years being 2004 and 2007.
This year’s film festival will be held May 12-23.
